Common HOA pool rules

The starting list covers what most community pools post: supervision of children, guest limits and check-in, glass, running and diving, swim diapers, pets, smoking, showers, thunderstorms and emergencies. Delete what doesn’t apply, add your own (one rule per line), and keep it short — a rules sign people can read in under a minute is a sign that gets read.

Write rules your staff can actually enforce. “Limit 2 guests per household” is easy to check at the desk; “be respectful” isn’t.

Rules sign vs. required safety signs

Your board can set house rules, but some pool signs are set by your state or county health code, sometimes with exact wording and minimum letter heights. Use this template for your community’s own rules, and check your local code for anything it requires — commonly a “no lifeguard on duty” warning, the pool’s capacity and an emergency number. The no-lifeguard sign prints at the large sizes those warnings usually need.

Printing it

Letter and Tabloid print on any office printer; laminate them or slip them into a clear sign holder for outdoor use. For a fence or gate, order the 18 × 24 in or 24 × 36 in size from a print shop on coroplast or aluminum composite — the PDF is vector, so it stays sharp at any size. Rules signs are usually posted at 18 × 24 in.

Questions

Pool rules sign FAQ

What rules should an HOA pool sign include?
Most include supervision of children, guest limits and check-in, no glass, no running or rough play, diving rules, swim diapers, pets, smoking, showering, thunderstorms and an emergency number. Add your hours and anything your board has adopted, and check your local health code for required wording.
Can I edit the rules?
Yes. Every rule is editable — type one rule per line, delete the ones you don’t need, and the sign resizes the text to fit the page.
What size should a pool rules sign be?
18 × 24 inches is the common size for a posted rules sign, printed on coroplast or aluminum at a print shop. Use Letter or Tabloid for a clubhouse bulletin board.
Who enforces the pool rules?
Usually the board and management office, and at staffed pools the pool attendant, who checks people in, applies guest limits and logs incidents. The Pool Attendant Company staffs community pools in six states.
